Every day, Yuki and her brother go home from school together. She doesn’t feel close to him – in fact, she doesn’t feel close to anybody and is often grumpy. As she angrily throws away her house keys, they accidentally fall down a storm drain. Yuki tries to retrieve them by climbing below ground and so, a spooky journey begins that will lead her into the anger-filled world of Princess Mud. There, she will not only meet mysterious beings but also her brother. In the end, both siblings manage to get back home and the uncanny crossing of the Mudland becomes a valuable experience in growing up.
With her empathic picture book, Beatrice Alemagna again succeeds in capturing the intense and multifaceted feelings of children. The wonderful and fantastic narrative enables small and large readers to revisit their own emotions.
